ABOUT ELLEN'S RUN

A Map of Ellen's Run

Ellen’s Run, a 5k (3.1 mile) race is an innovative, grassroots event that has achieved large-scale results toward meeting the Foundation’s goals. Held on the East End of Long Island where breast cancer rates are among the highest in the nation, Ellen’s Run draws on the strength of the local community and gives back to the community a substantial share of the money raised for local projects.

Ellen’s Run makes a difference:
Proceeds from Ellen’s Run have benefitted important programs such as a new mammography center for the South Fork, a screening program for women on the Shinnecock Reservation, a unique support program for women undergoing chemotherapy at the Post-Treatment Resource Program of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Ellen’s Well which was inaugurated in the May, 2000, and provides psychosocial support under the leadership of a specially trained certified social worker for breast cancer survivors on Long Island’s East End.

Ellen’s Run is unique:
Different from other charity races, Ellen’s Run is planned as an inclusive family event. It is for serious runners-both female and male-as well as non-serious runners, walkers, and supporters of all ages. A post-race breakfast is held for everyone, and all participants receive T-shirts and goody bags.

Ellen’s Run is empowering:
The Run engenders camaraderie and community as participants support or memorialize a loved one. Wearing pink bandanas, breast cancer survivors are recognized and applauded for their bravery and courage. A special prize is awarded to the first breast cancer survivor to finish the race. Those who have been touched by the disease or the specter of the disease have the chance to take a positive step.

Ellen’s Run is growing:
In 1996, the First Annual Ellen’s Run attracted more than 400 adults and 100 children and raised more than $62,000-an astonishing success for a first-time event! By the third year, the amount of money raised was more than double that of the first year. by the Fourth Annual Ellen’s Run, Ellen's Run had become the largest race on the South Fork with nearly 900 registered participants and it raised more than $160,000. As we enter our thirteenth year, we have grown to over 1,000 participants and have given more than $1.7 in grants.
